Atmosphere is a mixture of gases that extends around the earth's surface. It extends more than 600 kilomiters into space. So basically atmosphere is layers of air surrounding the earth. Most gases on earth do not harm living things.Carbon Dioxide and Oxygen support life on earth.
How does the composition and structure of the atmosphere protect us?
The gases on earth "Today" help protect us and support us.Some bacteria changes nitrogion that is from the atmosphere into substances that plants use to build proteins and plants give oxygen to breathe.
How does the composition and structure of the atmosphere insulate the planet?
From page 214 in the book "Science Saurus" it says "High in the atmosphere , a form of oxygen called ozone sheilds living things from much of the harmful radiation given off by the sun.

~ This layer is closest to the earth
~ The temperature drops on this layer when altitude increases
